April 15, 1889, Mister Montal, Merceron, de Maisonville, and Chabrand created the Grenoble and Dauphiné Promotional Union.
The vocation of this association is to "take all the necessary measures to encourage the development of Grenoble and the surrounding region."
The Union was created to study the measures susceptible of generally increasing the prosperity of Grenoble and the Dauphiné and to pursue the growth of such measures. They especially strove to attract foreign visitors to the city and the Dauphinois region, and to make their stay pleasant and easy.
This will to innovate and to challenge themselves became a constant force over the following decades, allowing Grenoble to fully uphold two of its mottos:
"Grenoble, capital of the Alps"
"Grenoble, Technological city"
